Cover-up cosmetics for acne

Covering up cosmetics is not a topic that is discussed very often by the dermatological community, but one that is of great interest to the general public.

From a dermatologist's point of view, long-term management of acne is the goal, and only the consistent use of appropriate acne treatments can provide long-term improvement in individuals that are predisposed towards developing acne.

Patients, however, will often need short-term solutions, and this is where cover up cosmetics can come in handy.

  • Acne cleansers are effective at clearing acne, but require time and patience as they do not clear existing acne. They aim to reduce the production of new pimples.
  • Acne medications will not clear acne immediately, and are unlikely to help clear acne in a week. If you have an important occasion where you need to look your best, acne medication will be unlikely to help you. This does not mean that you should discontinue use.
  • Cover-up cosmetics can effectively cover up minor and major blemishes. They are great tools that you can use to look your best for a special occasion. They can effectively cover up most pimples and acne scars which you may be concerned about.

The goal of cover-up cosmetics is to conceal flaws in the skin. Acne is one of the most common reasons to use cover-up, but almost any blemish, small growths, or discoloration can be a good reason to use these products.

To cover pimples and overall redness, green and blue colors are used to hide the redness. For blackheads, a more natural tone that matches your overall skin tone is preferred. These products won't improve your acne, but they can be very practical when you need to look your best.

  • Concealers are designed to blend well with your skin
  • Choose products that are labelled "non-comedogenic" or "non-acnegenic." While no product can guarantee that it won't trigger acne, these products are specially designed to minimize the chance of triggering breakouts.
  • Cleanse away the concealers and any other cosmetics before going to bed. You never want to leave cosmetics for too long as it can interact with the skin oil that is already abundant in that area.
