Acne vulgaris or "the common acne" is the most common form of acne that mainly affects teenagers, and is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and papules (pimples or zits). Severity varies greatly from periodic spots to severe acne that can cause scarring.

Acne afminata is an uncommon type of acne that is characterized by the proliferation of yellowish papules around the central regions of the face. It tends to be chronic, and difficult to control. This type of acne can sometimes cause scarring.

Acne conglobata is a very serious type of acne that results in severely inflamed comedones and nudules. This type of acne often results in enlarged nodules which are fluid-filled, and often extremely sensitive to touch. This is a severe form of acne that warrants aggressive treatment as scarring is common, and even systemic problems such as fever and malaise can often be seen.

Acne excoriee is a psychiatric problem associated with obsessive and compulsive picking of acne. Picking at acne is unsanitary and often worsens acne as the infection is pushed inwards, deeper into the skin, which can promote scarring. However, in this case, the underlying problem is often psychological, and potentially far more dangerous such as depression or other anxiety related problems.
